As The Bellingham Herald reported, E Company 1-161 Combined Arms Battalion of the 81st Brigade Washington National Guard reported to their armory on Monday, Aug. 18 for mobilization and eventual deployment to Iraq.

I have the following questions to pose to the community activists and those who make themselves feel good by slapping a "Bellingham, A Troops Home! City" bumper sticker on their car.

Since you aren't anti-troops and since you care so much for these soldiers welfare, did they see you at the armory to wish them a safe journey and a safe return?

Since you care so much for the welfare of these troops, if, goodness forbid, one of them should fall by the wayside, will you be there to comfort their wives, sons, daughters mothers and fathers?

When these soldiers come back from Iraq will you be there to welcome them? Will you be there to say, "We're glad you made it back?"

Or will you be too busy protesting the cause du jour and asking the City Council (which has no power to affect federal policy and, I believe, no business spending city time and money debating federal policy) to oppose military action in Iran or somewhere else?
