County Executive Pete Kremen is to be commended for having the courage to sign the ordinance providing funding for mental health programs in Whatcom County. It would have been easy to vote the ordinance and leave the mentally ill to fend for themselves or be processed thorough the criminal justice system. After all, the mentally ill are not a strong voting block as is evidenced by the fact that funding for mental health programs has been on the chopping block for years.

Congratulations, Pete, for making it possible for the county to extend a helping hand to those in need over the objections of many who have been blessed with good health and modest fortune.
