To help solve the fuel crisis in the US, try this: make all public transportation within city limits absolutely free to the public, including buses, subways, taxis, and specialized services for the handicapped.

In exchange for this service, the people living within city limits would be encouraged to give up their private cars to the city to be recycled into more vehicles for public service.

When new engine type vehicles become available, the ones that gave up their old gas guzzler cars get first pick - for free.

Just a thought.
