With the new "Top Two Primary," Democrats used an open, fair and inclusive nomination process after state Sen. Harriet Spanel announced her retirement. After hearing presentations and questioning five democratic candidates, 40th District Democratic Precinct Committee Officers from Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan Counties voted 56 percent for Kevin Ranker to be the Democratic Party's sole official nominee on their first ballot.
Then a wider endorsement process took place. Democrats from across the 40th Legislative District attended forums where they heard the candidates speak and answer questions. Again the results were clear. Ranker was endorsed by 74 percent of ballots cast. No other candidate received enough votes to earn our endorsement.
40th District Democrats have nominated and endorsed Ranker for state Senate. Ranker is also endorsed by the Washington Conservation Voters, the Washington Education Association, many other organizations, and hundreds of individuals.
We appreciate his broad recent experience, his depth of knowledge and his commitment to our issues - a clean environment, family wage jobs, quality schools and affordable health care. Ranker is uniquely qualified to hit the ground running. Please take time to learn more about Ranker. We encourage you to join us and vote by August 19.
