As a resident of King Mountain, I would like to thank The Bellingham Herald's editorial board for the Aug. 10 "Our View" editorial pointing out that growth planning is not working.
Recent testimony by landowners to the City Council said this annexation is widely supported. That may be true of some, including those who want to develop their land. However, many of my neighbors do not support the plan to "densify" this area.
Earlier this year the County Council voted to add most of the rest of King Mountain to the urban growth area. What the editorial predicts is already happening: the landowner, Ralph Black, is petitioning to annex the new area. The goal is to build hundreds of homes on currently undeveloped land. The rural area is already being logged.
The project will destroy an important wildlife corridor to Squalicum Creek. Salmon streams are also located below the area.
If the city truly wants infill, now is the time for the mayor and council to remove the new King Mountain urban growth area from Bellingham's growth area, before it is too late.
Citizens, please stop sprawl by asking your representatives to let the rest of King Mountain remain rural, as currently zoned.
