Why do the stories in The Bellingham Herald report that the recent shooting death of a hiker was an "accident?" Someone intentionally purchased a rifle and ammunition. The shooter intentionally loaded the weapon, selected a target, released the safety, aimed and discharged it.
The target, a middle aged woman with a backpack, bore little resemblance to a bear, even from 120 yards (the distance from one football end zone to the other).
On Friday, the Herald offered hikers tips on how to avoid being killed on the trail. Strangely none were offered to hunters on how to distinguish between people and animals. Apparently the onus for safety is on the potential victims, rather than the potential killers.
This incident warrants arrests, indictments, prosecution and trials. Let the courts determine if it was indeed an accident, or something more malevolent.
