I am so happy to read that Americans have cut back on gasoline use by 2 percent to 3 percent this summer, bringing down oil prices somewhat. It's documented that we're buying less gas, driving more slowly, and using alternative transportation modes.

This shift in behavior is obvious in Bellingham where one sees lots of bike riders now, and WTA ridership is up.

Now that we know we can do it, let's keep going in this environmentally sound direction. Seeing that we can get along well without using our cars all the time, let's continue our new travel modes until they become habits - second nature.

For one thing, we will need whatever savings we garner on gasoline to pay for heating our homes this winter, given the rising cost of natural gas and heating oil - a necessity for which it's harder to find viable alternatives. Plus, for the good of the whole, we will be helping a little to stave off the grave threat of global warming.
