Not happy for having to register for military

Here comes the big one, my 18th birthday.

As it gets closer I am looking forward to my senior year of high school, planning for college and the ability to be part of the democratic process. But all of this is tempered by the fact that I am looking at the bleak reality of having to register for the draft.

I consider war a travesty and refuse to participate in any activity that supports U.S. involvement. Although no draft is in effect at this time, failure to register can result in loss of federal financial aid, suspension of driving privileges, and in some cases, restrictions on admission to university.

If there were a required registration for a draft into social or environmental service, rather than selective/military service, I would gladly sign my name.

I am supposed to have freedom and liberty; if I can't conscientiously be associated with the military in any way then I should have free choice regarding registration, without consequence.
