The Newstand has been the brightest spot on Magnolia Street for 18 years. For 18 years every morning my husband has been greeted by Ira Stohl and his staff when he picks up his stack of daily newspapers. I have visited at least three times weekly to get my beloved British and French magazines. There is no place north of Seattle (I'm only guessing that Seattle even has such a place) that carries the inspired selection of periodicals that Ira's newstand does.
I'm sad and angry about the loss of this treasure that Bellingham has been so lucky to have for 18 years. Supplier "Source Interlink" should be slapped silly for its impersonal and callous cutting off of an important and unique retailer.
Ira, his co-worker, local writer and humorist Peter Gunn, and all the staff should have our support and appreciation for providing us with a refuge, a place to dream, and the education that comes from an international source of periodicals right here in our town. This writer and her family wish the very best for Ira, Peter, and everyone at the Newstand for a future of happiness. Thank you for creating a haven of information and inspiration in downtown Bellingham.
