I write to urge U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray to vote no on the renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act passed recently by the House.

The current bill hands an administration that I believe has abused its power the ability to continuing doing so. It explicitly threatens our Fourth Amendment rights and our right to privacy.

The FISA bill indirectly permits mass untargeted surveillance of Americans’ communications, offers telephone companies blanket immunity for their wrongdoing (preventing Americans from learning the extent of illegal spying), and permits the government to continue to spy for up to 60 days without a warrant while the government appeals FISA decisions.

The bill lacks the safeguards that the last seven years have made clear are necessary to protect Americans.
