My thumbs down: When I served on the Mayor’s/City Council’s Budget Advisory Committee, the committee noted that the city currently imposes a double-digit utility tax on our water bills every month.

This funding is routed to the General Fund and used for a variety of purposes that haven’t much, if anything, to do with the water utility. Even the interest earned on this revenue probably goes to some other purpose.

I suggest to the new mayor and new and incumbent City Council members that they direct their attention to this fact as they claim to be searching desperately for water meter funding.

My thumbs up: For years the city administration has been in denial over meters and water conservation, at the same time prioritizing the protection of Lake Whatcom and our water supply.

I’m glad we can finally expect metered water and conservation.

Now let’s apply the water utility tax to the cost of those meters.
