As a resident of Whatcom County, I want to commend Carl Weimer, Laurie Caskey- Schreiber, and Seth Fleetwood for doing what needs to be done to increase spending on county programs that help the mentally ill and chemically dependent of Whatcom County.
Not only is what they are doing brave and noble, but they are ensuring that in this time of desperate economic news, we do not forget that as a society we owe it to those who need the government’s help.
This tax will not be passed if it is left up to the voters. Times are too scary for people to think of the good of the whole.
The voters would ignore the fact that this tax is meant to help their children, their siblings, their parents, and yes, even their neighbors.
Given the attitude of some Whatcom County voters, Weimer, Caskey-Schreiber and Fleetwood will probably never get elected again.
But they can leave office knowing that they have done a very good thing for the good of the people they were elected to serve.
