In regard to the June 15 story, “Oil companies gain approval to do work around polar bears”:
I believe the author, Dina Cappiello, has expressed opinion, and not just facts.
She cites global warming as a reason the polar bears are threatened.
She goes on to say that “the Bush administration is giving oil companies permission to annoy them and potentially harm them.”
Further, she said “the new regulations give oil companies a blank check to harass the polar bear.”
She went on to give another opinion that “Polar bears are naturally curious and sensitive to changes in their environment.”
At the very end, she admits that since 1991, the oil companies’ presence has had no effect on the polar bear’s populations.
In fact there are 20 distinct populations of polar bears. Two of the populations comprising 16.4 percent are decreasing, 10 populations comprising 45.4 percent are stable and two populations comprising 13.6 percent are increasing
Cappiello doesn’t mention the fact that the United States is in a race to claim that possible oil deposit ahead of the Russians, who also have eyes on it.
Shell bid $2.5 billion for the rights to search.
