After two years as a Bellingham resident, bus rider and pedestrian, my observation is that traffic thrives on a culture of speeding, and an almost scofflaw attitude.
Whose fault is this: the strength of the current pulls in both the willing and the unwilling.
At times, traffic dangerously goads the busses, and a non-jaywalking pedestrian could get more respect as a traffic cone.
If “time is money” then speeding is stealing — unless you want to change the rules to suit the players. Traffic seeks its own level.
This may be a strong statement, yet it is based on hundreds of hours of observation and a 1,001 local incidents I’ve read about, heard about, witnessed and personally experienced.
