A letter writer recently took issue with statements by City Councilman Jack Weiss regarding peak oil. He was “shocked” by Weiss’ “negative and pessimistic outlook on the future of our community.”
Sadly, I find his letter exemplifies the attitudes of a large segment of our society. It seems that having representatives who take the long view somehow disturbs the peaceful slumbers of a great many people.
Much better, then, that we should be a nation of Pollyannas, whose greatest concerns are gas prices, taxes, illegal aliens and who got voted out on “Survivor.”
Yes, you still have the liberty of hiding your head in the sand — but let’s not forget the fable of the ant and the grasshopper.
When the crisis is upon us, it’s those same “grasshoppers” who will be begging the government to redistribute resources, by force, because they were so busy daydreaming and complaining about “negativity” that they got caught with their collective pants around their ankles.
For those who dare to inform themselves about peak oil, lifeaftertheoilcrash.net is a good starting point.
I’ve never met Weiss, but his understanding of world issues and concern for our future have garnered my respect.
