COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: Urquhart wins amateur golf championship

Bellingham's Fred Urquhart won the Whatcom County Amateur Championship for the second straight year, scoring a 2-under par 142 for the low gross of the field last weekend at Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club.

Clark MacPherson finished with a score of 145 to win the low gross in division 1 and David Huynh of Burlington took low gross in division 2 with a score of 163.

The division 1 net winner was Dirk Currey with a score of 142. The Division 2 net winner was a tie between Jay Tinker, Bob Warner, and Mike Lee, all shooting 142.

NATIONALS WIN BORDERLINE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Lynden Nationals defeated the Whatcom Mariners 10-0 to win the Borderline Baseball League championship on Monday, Sept. 29, at Joe Martin Field.

Juan Hernandez pitched seven shutout innings and drove in five runs on three hits.

The Nationals won the BBL regular season league play with a 17-3 record and ended up 20-3.

Regulars for the Nationals are: Kevin Fry, Lonnie Bauman, Jacob Ferry, Juan Hernandez, Tim Thomas, Justin Steinbach, Clint Van Weerdhuizen, Mike Morrow, Matt Roller, Dan Vander Kooi, Bob Hagedorn and John Rozeboom.

VERMEULEN GETS ANOTHER ACE

Casey Vermeulen from Lynden had his third hole-in-one in 13 years with an ace on Friday, Sept. 26, at Raspberry Ridge Golf Course.

Vermeulen used a driver on the 180 yard, No. 9 hole. Witnesses were Rich Biesheuvel, Terry Burke and Doyle Kortlever.

WWU MEN'S RUGBY PLAYS UBC IN EXHIBITION

The Western men's rugby team kicked off the 2008-09 season against the University of British Columbia's 2nd side on Friday, Sept. 26 at Carver Field on Campus.

Western showed solid defensive skill and strong rucking in their attack in a 17-0 loss against Canada's premier collegiate rugby program. UBC scored late in the first half on a quick penalty inside the Western five-meter line.

UBC scored again midway through the second half and capped the scoring with a solid try in the final 10 minutes.

Western hosts Division I WSU at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Carver Field.
