The Bellingham Bash, a team of 13- and 14-year-olds from Bellingham, Ferndale and Burlington, won the Pony Baseball 14-and-& under Northwest Regional Championships last weekend in Kirkland.

With its victories, Bellingham became the first U-14 team from Whatcom County to win a Pony regional championship. The Bash also advance to the Western United States Championships this weekend in Fullerton, Calif., where it will compete against seven other regional winners for the right to advance to the Pony U-14 World Series in Pennsylvania.

The Bash, which lost in the semifinals of the regional tournament last summer, had to battle through a pair of tough games on the final two days of the tournament, coming back to beat Kirkland 6-5 in an extra-inning semifinal and Enumclaw 7-4 in the final.

Bellingham (61-3) opens the Western United States Championships on Saturday, Aug. 2, against the regional champion from Hawaii.

People or organizations willing to donate money to help with the Bash's travel expenses to California are asked to call coach Eric Haas at 224-1899.
