Western Washington University's Audrey Coon won three medals this past weekend at the U.S. Rowing Club National Championships, a five-day regatta on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J.
Coon, who will be a senior at Western this fall, won gold in the women's open lightweight eight and intermediate lightweight four, and also silvered in the intermediate pair.
The 21-year-old Coon competed with the Thompson Boat Center Development Camp, a club team she has trained with this summer on the historic Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
Her shell cruised in the lightweight eight, winning by 13.21 seconds. TBC won the lightweight four by more than six seconds.
Coon, one of 1,800 athletes competing at the club national championships, was in Western's varsity eight last spring that won an unprecedented fourth straight NCAA Division II national championship. She has been a member of the last two national title-winning squads.
RANGERS TAKE FIRST
The WFC Rangers GU17 Gold team came in first place in their division at the Beaverton Cup last weekend.
Teams from the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and California competed in the tournament.
Team members include Hanna Wade, Danielle Lange, Gabby Nunez, Kelly Hayden, Leah Thomson, Caitlin Phillips, Stephanie Reed, Liz Paull, Brook Steinberg, Kate Bachenberg, Amy Wilson, Lindsey Gerstenkorn, Tanya Bjornsson, Daisha Zwick, Bianca Long and Katie Franz. The team is coached by Jason Conway and Justin Nelson.
MERIDIAN GIRLS WIN
The Meridian girls won both the sixth grade and third grade divisions at the Curt Maberry Memorial Classic 3 on 3 basketball tournament July 17-18 in Lynden.
The sixth grade Maniac Monkeys defeated Lynden's Interior Doors and More in the championship game.
Meridian players were Sara Dougan, Sydney Swanson, Kira Nelson and Tanna Benson.
The third grade Mini Monkeys team went undefeated on the way to winning their championship, beating the Super Hoopers in the final game.
Meridian players were Katie Dougan, Natalie Swanson, Macy Nelson and Taran Tutterow.
Both teams are coached by Mark and Theresa Swanson.
THREE RUNNERS HELP WEST TEAM WIN
Three Whatcom County high school runners competed in the East West All-Star Race in Seattle on Saturday, July 19.
The race pits runners from each side of the mountains against each other on a 5K course at Woodland Park. This summer, the west side of the mountains prevailed in the women's and men's divisions.
Local runners who ran the annual race were Alanna Steele (19:41, sixth place, Sehome), Michelle Steiger (20:24, ninth place, Lynden Christian) and Haley Pratt (23:12, 24th place, Meridian). Pratt was awarded the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association Scholarship at the event for her academic and athletic accomplishments.
SEHOME SOPHOMORES PLACE FIRST AT TRIATHLON
Several Bellingham residents were among the winners in the Seafair Triathlon on Sunday, July 20 at Seward Park in Seattle.
Katie Klein, Allison Fisher and Mimi Krieger, all 15 and sophomores at Sehome, placed first in the women's relay event.
The event featured a half-mile swim in Lake Washington, followed by a 12-mile bike ride along Lake Washington, and a 3.1-mile run around Seward Park.
