The Lynden Lions 13U Babe Ruth baseball team won the North Washington State Babe Ruth Tournament on Sunday, July 13 in Ephrata.
The Lions went 4-1 in the first two days to advance to the championship game. Lynden needed to defeat Central Kitsap twice in the championship to win the tournament. Lynden began with a 15-0 victory in five innings and later won 3-1 to win the title.
Lynden outscored its opponents 56-17 over seven games, led by Zach Vis, who pitched 15 innings and gave up two runs. Also pitching well were Tanner Olson, Luke Christianson, Matt Meyer and John Shine.
Lynden’s offense was led by Meyer, Vis and Josh Kraght.
Team members include Braxton Anderson, Christianson, Ben Johnson, Kraght, Meyer, Olson, Dak Shagren, Shine, Shane Treloar and Vis. Team manager is John Olson.
Lynden advances to the Babe Ruth 13U Regional Tournament July 28 in Kelso. The winner advances to the Babe Ruth World Series in New York in August.
Lynden quailed for the tournament by winning the Skagit/ Whatcom County district.
BLUE SOX WIN STATE TITLE
The Bellingham Blue Sox won a state title at the Cal Ripken 12U baseball tournament last week in Ellensburg.
Bellingham defeated Ferndale 5-2 in the title game, with Oscar White earning the victory.
The Blue Sox defeated Moses Lake 5-3 in extra innings in the semifinals.
Play of the Tournament Ball was given to Christian Higgins, who had pitched a six-inning complete game and then pitched a perfect sixth inning to seal the win against Ferndale.
Home runs were hit by Tyler Knutsen, Landon Tripp and Austin Rapp.
The Blue Sox next go to Kennewick to play in the regional tournament, where they will play against teams from eight states and Canada. The winner will earn a spot in the Cal Ripken World Series in Tennessee.
Team members include Davis Hampton, Higgins, Knutsen, Jack Melhorn, Austin Rapp, Taylor Rapp, Chad Stevenson, Austin Sugden, Tripp, Austin Vosburgh, White and Josh Zavisubin. The coaches are Jeff Knutsen, Bill Tripp, Andrew Subin and Chris Rapp.
STICKMEN WIN TITLE
The Stickmen Baseball team won the Northern Sectional Pony Championship last weekend in Mercer Island.
The team of 13-year-olds went undefeated and will play in the regional championships.
The team was led in pitching by Alex Check, Brant Wark and Jake Schroeder. Offensively, it was led by Check. The Stickmen are 48-11.
Team members include Schroeder, Check, Connor Phelps, Anthony Reyes, Mathew Forhan, Matt Richard, Brad Alvord, Jon Bennett, Austyn Sprague, Allen Sutton, Wark, Daniel Goebel and Aaron Burke. Team coaches are Brandon Hundt, Josh Helderop and Bruce Tipton.
WFC RANGERS PLACE 2ND
The WFC Rangers Girls’ Under 19 soccer team placed second at the United State Youth Soccer Association Tournament’s Washington State Cup tournament and earned a berth in the Far West Regionals in Honolulu.
They emerged out of group play after playing the Arizona and Hawaii state champions and Arizona’s wild-card team. In the quarterfinals, they lost to Cal South 3-0.
The team is one of the top eight teams in the 12-state Western Region.
Players attending the regionals were Hayley Haverstraw, Alyssa Michel, Mari Tarleton, Molly Shannon, Nina Rhea, Bailey Richardson, Miranda Heslep, Kirstin Salminen, Keller Haden, Emily Frankland, Chantel Green and Sarah Berentson. The team is coached by Josh Turpen and Dean Haverstraw.
MOUNT BAKER FINISHES 3RD
North Olympic won the Washington State Babe Ruth softball tournament last weekend.
Ellensburg finished second and Mount Baker was third. The top three teams advance to the regional tournament in Meridian, Idaho.
Mount Baker team members include Alyssa Linderman, Makenzie Gates, Megan Young, Emily Yost, Ashya Villaluz, Tawni Galbraith, Hana Verry, Jennifer Kentner, Emma Lallas, Emily Brandland, Aleks Toivola and Maggie Pattison. Coaches are Paul Yost, Mark Young and Ken Gates.
BLAZERS FINISH SECOND
The Bellingham Blazers 10U Cal Ripken team lost to Eastmont 2-0 in the state championship game on Sunday, July 13.
The Blazers outscored their opponents 72-6 in six games in the single-elimination tournament and hit .510 as a team.
The pitching staff of Nick Nolan, Cole Phelps, Charlie Carmichael, Austin Shenton, Aaron Nichols and Ernie Yake allowed five earned runs in six games.
Yake led the team with a .737 average and Phelps hit .588. Nolan hit .566 and had a grand slam in the team’s first game. Austin Shenton hit .533, Carmichael hit .44 and Nichols hit .417.
Team members include Carmichael, Jashawn Dorsey, Jonathan Larson, Nichols, Will Nickleson, Nick Nolan, Zack Nolan, Phelps, Drew Segren, Shenton, Yake and Felix Zavisubin.
Coaches are Bob Carmichael, Vern Yake and Brian Phelps.
FERNDALE PLACES SECOND
The Ferndale Cal Ripken 12- U baseball team placed second at the North Washington State Tournament last weekend in Ellensburg.
Ferndale, which hit eight home runs in the tournament, advances to the regionals in Kennewick next week.
Team members include Anthony Fleck, Cody Marshall, Pete Pennylegion, Cooper Clark, Brady Shearer, Brady Bauthues, Andrew Littrell, Taylor Van Vleck, Jared Garcia, Anthony Pace, Earl Johnson and Cameron Ivy. The coaches are Brad Bauthues, Chris Pace and Troy Clark.
CAN AM 7S TOURNAMENT
Old Puget Sound Beach (Seattle) defeated Meraloma Club (B.C.) 26-12 in the Can Am 7s Rugby Championship to win the Can Am Cup on Saturday, July 12 at the Bellingham Rugby and Polo Club.
The Geoducks from Chuckanut Bay took third place in the Competitive Division beating UBC Old Boys (B.C.) 34-12, Portland 41-17 and Missoula 28- 0 to advance to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Old Puget Sound Beach. The Geoducks beat James Bay (B.C.) for third place.
In the B Division, the Bayside Sharks beat Simon Fraser University (B.C.) 17-15. James Bay U19s beat the Young Sharks from Bayside (10-0) for the U19 Championship.
KEG/FOLLIS REALTY WINS
The Keg/Follis Realty softball team won the Hummbabes XVII Softball Tourney in Wenatchee last weekend.
The team went 6-1 and defeated Hummbabes 7-6 in the championship game. Tournament MVP Brian Talley and All- Stars Matt Galley, Mark Scholten and Barry Lovell led the way. Also playing were Bret Beaupain, Craig Bartl, Aaron Dallas, Steve Novak, Kevin Patterson, Joe Shearer, Scott Thrasher and Eddie Velasquez.
The team is coached by Michael Scholten.
ICE TAKE SECOND
The Bellingham Ice 14U team took second place in the Babe Ruth Softball Tournament on Saturday, July 12 at Bender Fields in Lynden.
The Ice will compete in the regional tournament in Moscow, Idaho.
Team members include Meagan McIntyre, Amy Edmondson, Courtney Blatz, Trevor Goodridge, Alexa Gosda, Breanna Heezn, Morgan Henry, Rose Jacobson, Kaylie Butenschogen, Carmen Poikge, Lindsay Pysden, Jazlyn Allan and Jasmine Vail. Coaches are Alexis Hujar and Randy McIntyre.
DOLPHINS HAVE TOP SWIMS
The Whatcom County YMCA Dolphins had two high-point trophies and four first-place finishes at the Moses Lake Sizzlin’ Summer Invtiational Swim Meet on July 11-13.
Olivia Nelson, 10, won the A Division 50 and 100 butterfly, and her overall combined score was good for fourth place individual in the A Division.
Sam Hunter, 8, took second place individually in the A Division.
Josephine Hegeberg, 12, won the A Division 50 and 100 breaststroke and had two new Indland Empire A level times in the 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle.
Louie Hunter, 12, earned three A Division ribbons, three new A level times and a B Division win in the 50 butterfly.
Jonathan Hegeberg, 10, earned three A Division ribbons.
Ricky Burgos, 10, had two B Division ribbons in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
