COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: Holdridge to play in Junior World Championship

Will Holdridge of Bellingham and a Lynden High School senior golfer qualified for the Junior World Championships to be held at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Calif.

Holdridge shot rounds of 70- 69—139, 5-under par, to qualify for the event. He needed a birdie on the final hole at Tumwater Valley Municipal Golf Course to qualify.

Holdridge also qualified to be a member of the Pacific Northwest’s Junior America’s Cup team. This competition pits teams from all over the United States against each other.

The Junior World Championships is July 14-18 and the Junior America’s Cup is July 30- Aug. 2.

BABY BELLS WIN

The Bellingham Baby Bells, a Cal Ripken 11U all-star baseball team, won the Firecracker Tournament in Moses Lake last weekend.

The Bells defeated teams from Ephrata, Othello, Kirkland and Moscow, Idaho, to advance to the championship, where they defeated Moses Lake 8-3.

The team will head to Wenatchee this weekend for the state tournament.

Team members are: Leif Anderson, Dante Check, Ryan Fox, Michael Guerrero, Kalien Hayes, Tyler Hruby, Kyle Little, Harper Moore, Carter Nickelson, Nate Pearsall, Coleman Schwab, David Stealy and Ben Tripp. The team is coached by Pat Check, Nick Perigo, Bill Pearsall and Greg Little.

LYNDEN TEAM OFF TO STATE

The Lynden 13U Babe Ruth baseball team won the District 1 and 2 championship in Anacortes on Sunday.

Lynden advances as the No. 1 seed to the state Babe Ruth tournament in Ephrata beginning today.

Lynden advanced by defeating Bellingham 10-4 on Sunday.

Lynden team members are: Braxton Anderson, Luke Christianson, Ben Johnson, Josh Kraght, Tanner Olson, Matt Meyer, Dak Shagren, John Shine, Shane Treloar and Zach Vis.

FERRAN HONORED

George Ferran of Bellingham has been elected to the 2008 Class of the Texas League Hall of Fame.

Ferran pitched for Shreveport in 1985 and 1986 and compiled a 20-2 Texas League record. He was the second of two Texas League pitchers to win the pitcher’s triple crown,

leading the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA.

Grand Slam 2008 week award winners for 7- to 10- year-olds for the week of June 30-July 1 are as follows: Offensive player of the week: Leif Ericksen, Cubs; Les Lee Mr. Hustle Award: Owen McCord, Brewers; Wade King Inspirational winner: Robbie Morisset; Andrew Jones Most Improved: Baylor Galley, Cubs; Super Star Individual winner: Devon Trueb, Red Sox; and Team Super Star winners: Cubs, coached by Don Ericksen.
