COMMUNITY SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Ebenezer competes at nationals

The Ebenezer Christian School archery team competed in the NASP national championships on Saturday in Louisville, Ky., in the largest archery tournament in U.S. history.
The team score of 2,932 was the 26th best score in the middle school division, out of 72 teams.
More than 3,000 archers participated in the event.
Ebenezer’s Marcus DeBoer scored a 270, which placed him 65th in the boys middle school division out of 513; Emily Buist scored a 254 and placed 84th and Taryn Vis scored a 252, which placed her 90th in the girl’s middle school division out of 342. John Van Dalen IV scored a 250, which placed him 63rd in the boy’s elementary division out of 570.
BAJEMA, GLASER PARTICIPATE IN JUDO NATIONALS
The Western Judo Club had two participants in the U.S. Judo Nationals on April 11-12 in Virginia Beach, Va.
Ralf Bajema took first place in the Masters 70-74yr, 73Kg Division. Bajema also took second in the Masters 50+yr/Open Division.
Mark Glaser took second in the Masters 45-49yr/81Kg Division.
TWO GYMNASTS WIN TITLES
Stephanie Johnson and Ashlee Stiles competed for Gym Star Sports Center at the Washington State Level 4 Gymnastics Meet held April 26 in Bellevue. It is the first time Gym Star Sports Center has competed at the state level.
Ashlee Stiles finished as state champion on the balance beam in her age group/division and 3rd place all around. Stephanie Johnson is the vault champion and finished 9th place all-around her age group/division. Both girls live in Ferndale and are coached by Carolyn Saletto.
BELLINGHAM BAY SWIMMERS SWIM IN ISLAND INVITE
The Bellingham Bay Swim Team (BBST) had numerous swimmers qualify and compete in Championship Finals (Top 8) of the 2008 Island Invitational held in Victoria, B.C., last weekend.
Top 8 finishers for BBST were: Carlee Bock, 12 (50 free-3rd, 100 free-3rd, 400 free-7th, 50 backstroke-3rd, 200 backstroke-4th, 200 individual medley- 4th, 100 breaststroke-6th); Rylie Martin, 13 (200 individual medley-3rd, 50 backstroke- 3rd, 200 backstroke-3rd, 50 free- 5th, 100 free-4th, 400 free 5th); Gus Evans, 12 (100 breaststroke-2nd, 50 breaststroke-3rd, 50 fly-4th, 50 back- 5th, 50 free-7th); Sky Bax, 17 (50 backstroke- 2nd, 100 backstroke-4th, 50 breaststroke-5th, 200 breaststroke-6th); Jessica Vlasic, 16 (200 backstroke-3rd, 100 free-5th, 200 individual medley-5th); Donovan Brogan, 16 (100 fly-4th, 50 backstroke-5th, 200 individual medley- 6th, 50 free-8th, 400 free-8th); Camorah King, 13 (50 breaststroke-3rd, 200 breaststroke-4th, 100 Breaststroke-6th); Erin Parkinson, 15 (200 breaststroke- 6th, 100 breaststroke-8th); Ali Fisher, 15 (100 backstroke-8th).
Julie Maurer, 14, swam to six lifetime best times. The 400 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams of Martin, Parkinson, Vlasic and Fisher broke team records that had stood since 1997 and 1998.
RAIDERS DOMINATE PUGET SOUND
The Undefeated Whatcom County Raiders torched the home Puget Sound Pirates 66-0 last weekend.
The Pirates had no answer for the suffocating Raiders defense. Safety Reggie Powell continued his consecutive game streak with at least one interception per game.
The Raiders move to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in Cascade Football League.
QB Bret Smith tied a team record with 6 touchdown passes, wide receiver Toby Seim caught four touchdowns and had a two-point conversion, running back Rob Knight ran for 176 yards, two TDs and a two-point conversion.
Whatcom’s Addison Perrin stripped the ball on a play, Justin Kardash recovered and ran 60 yards for the touchdown for the game’s first points.
The Tacoma Invaders and Whatcom County Raiders hook up at 6 p.m. Saturday at Civic Stadium. Both teams have 3-0 records, and the winner will take over first place in the league standings midway through the regular season.
ANGLER MEETINGS
The Bellingham Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers invites the public to attend the monthly meetings.
The meetings includge guest speakers on various topics and there is an annual fishing derby.
The meetings are at Nicki’s Bella Marina Restaurant at 2615 Harbor Loop Drive at 7 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month.
BELLINGHAM BASH CLAIM TITLE
The Bellingham Bash, a 14-year-old PONY baseball team, won it’s fifth consecutive tournament at Bender Fields in Lynden. The Bash improved their record on the season to 21-0 with the win. Bellingham defeated Ferndale in the final 8-2 after trailing headed into the final inning.
Hitting stars for Bellingham included Cody Mason and Cody Haas with tworun doubles in the last inning to seal the victory. Tanner Dawson, Mickey Satushek and Kyle Prather all hit home runs during the weekend for Bellingham.
BULLDOGS WIN AGAINST LIGHTNING
In a must-win game to stay alive for a potential playoff berth, the Bellingham Bulldogs football team beat the Skagit Valley Lightning 17-14 in a close game at Oak Harbor High School.
Joel Pears started the scoring with an interception return for a touchdown. Pears, who is also the kicker, added the extra point.
