The Chuckanut men’s rugby U-19 Steamers won two games at the White Rock Classic on April 24 in White Rock, B.C.

The Steamers beat Earl Marriot (B.C.) 22-0 and defeated Peninsula (San Francisco) 15-0. Erik Schacht led the Steamers with two tries on the day. Michael Gonzalez, Loui Mitchell, Jacob Bates, Bob Couchman, Max Rosenthal and Nick Smith each had trys. Mitchell also had one conversion.

The Steamers finished the league season 7-0 after defeating Seattle 62-5.

Scoring for Chuckanut were Evan Larson (two tries), Paul Smith (two tries), Gonzalez (two tries), Mitchell (one try), Travis Rettke (one try) Tyler Beavis (one try) and Smith (one try). Gavin Snyder had one conversion.

Chuckanut will play Budd Bay of Olympia at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the polo fields in Ferndale. The winner will play the winner of Harbour of Tacoma vs Liberty of Seattle at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the polo fields.

GIRLS’ RUGBY TEAM WINS

The Chuckanut Bay U-19 girls’ rugby team finished its season with a 44-5 win over Kent.

Jaime Pearsall scored three tries, Kyleigh Wells scored two tries and McKenzie Morris, Chris Bates and Susie Molioo scored one try each. Susie Molioo also scored two conversions.

RAIDERS WIN BIG

The Whatcom County Raiders defeated the Olympic Peninsula Eagles 63-6 to open the Cascade Football League season on Saturday in Port Townsand.

Quarterback Donald Buchanan threw for a teamrecord six touchdowns and receiver Matt Hoss scored three touchdowns. Receiver Toby Seim added two touchdowns and defensive back Aaron Iverson ran back an interception for a touchdown.

The Raiders play their home opener at 6 p.m. Saturday at Civic Stadium against the Renton Raves. Tickets are $6 and discounted tickets of $3.50 are available until Friday by calling the Brigid Collins Family Support Center at 734-4616. Four wrestlers from Nooksack Valley placed at the Olympic Challenge on Saturday in Port Angeles.

Nick Torress took first place in the 171-pound caded division. Tarran Klemann took second in the 112-pound caded division. Tanner Klemann placed first in the 80-pound novice division. Wilber Estrada took third place in the 80- pound novice division.

BLOWFISH DO WELL

The Bellingham Bay Swim Team Blowfish hosted 160 swimmers on April 26 at the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center for the 2008 Blowfish Spring Pentathlon.

BBST had 60 swimmers participate and won several awards, including division winners Bliss Cui (9-years-old girls), Rowan King (9-year-old boys), Cole Vaery (10-year-old boys), Andy Small (13-year-old boys) and Jessica Vlassic (14-and-over girls).

Other BBST swimmers finishing in the top six in their divisions were: 9-year-old boys, Shea Mielke; 10-year-old girls, Hannah Holmgren (fifth), Savannah Smith (sixth); 10-year-old boys, Jonathan Chang (second), Colin Hakeman (fifth), Stuart Relay (sixth); 11-year-old girls, Taylor Shewchuk (third), Gwen Roley (fifth); 12-year-old girls, Carlee Bock (third), Shirley Lam (fourth); 12-year-old boys, Evan Miksovsky (fourth), William Hutchinson (fifth); 13-year-old girls, Rylie Martin (third), Kaitlin Doyle (fourth); 13-year-old boys, Allen Cui (second), Patrick Gregory (fourth); 14-and-over girls, Ali Fisher (second), Aly Fell (fourth), Erin Parkinson (sixth); and 14-and-over boys, Austin Fish (second), Eddie Myers (fifth).

HUGHES WINS EVENT

Mike Hughes took first place in the production division at the 2008 Area 6 Championships for the South River Gun Club.

Hughes, who graduated from Mount Baker High School in 1991, placed first out of 63 participants. The production division is for pistols that are substantially stock guns with a limited degree of modification allowed.

Hughes won last year’s Area 1 championship.
