The Chuckanut Bay U16 Steamers downed Liberty Rugby Club from Seattle 51-0 to win the State Rugby Championship on Saturday.

Ben Morvee led the way, scoring 16 points on two trys and three conversions while Wayne Lamositele added three trys. Single trys were scored by Riley Locker, Jacob Bays, Cody Turner and Ashton Green. Chuckanut led at the half 34-0.

Chuckanut Bay U19 won their sixth league game in a row by defeating Liberty 31- 26.

Chuckanut had to come from behind in the last six minutes to pull out the victory.

Paul Wallace and Nick Smith each had two tries for the Steamers. Jacob Bates also scored a try with Loui Mitchell converting three of five on the day.

Chuckanut (10-0) will play for its first undefeated league season when the team faces the Seattle Vikings on Saturday at the Ferndale Polo Fields. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

SKI TO SEA REGISTRATION

Registration spots for the Ski to Sea Race on May 25 and the Junior Ski to Sea Race on May 17 are filling up, and racers are urged to submit their registration applications as soon as possible.

The Junior race consists of three divisions: elementary school (grades 3-5), middle school (grades 6-8) and community division (grades 3 or above). The deadline for registration is May 7.

The Ski to Sea race consists of 14 divisions in competitive, Whatcom County and recreational, with each section made up of open, women and mixed. The other five divisions are high school, master (over 40), veterans (over 50), family and corporate.

Early-bird registration ends on May 1. After May 1, prices increase.

Twenty-six martial arts students from Bellingham-based Team Rock Solid won 87 medals and three grand championships at the Tiger Balm Internationals tournament on March 15-16 in North Vancouver, B.C.

Joby Ashby, 13, took first in three events: underbelt hardstyle creative weapons, underbelt sparring and underbelt hard-style open hands form. He was also grand champion with sword forms.

Evan Binkley, 24, won in continuous sparring; Becca Greene, 10, took first in underbelt hard-style creative weapons; Sarah Lindsay won junior sparring and hard-style open hand forms; Tanner Simpson, 8, won hard creative forms and Lily Taylor, 9, won hard-style creative weapons and was grand champion in kama forms.

Carl Rice, 18, won seven titles: black belt hard and soft creative weapons forms, black belt hard and soft choreographed musical weapons forms, black belt hard and soft open musical weapons forms, black belt hard creative forms, black belt hard choreographed musical forms, black belt kenpo forms and black belt hard creative forms.

RUGBY TEAM WINS

The Whatcom County fourth- and fifth-grade All- Stars went undefeated and won the their division at a rugby tournament in Canada.

In the first game, Whatcom County beat Bayside Blue Sharks 25-0. Scoring for Whatcom with one try apiece each were Terrel Nelson, Daja Curtis, Clayton O’Donnell, Adam Evans and Christian Nelson.

In the second round against Langley, B.C., Whatcom County won 15-0. Terrel Nelson and Adam Evans had a try each and Wilbur Estrada finished out Whatcom’s scoring.

Whatcom County defeated United 40-0 in the third round. Christian Nelson scored four trys, Wilbur Estrada had three trys and Daja Curtis had one try.

In the final, Whatcom beat The Bayside White Sharks 15- 10. Wilbur Estrada scored twice and Christian Nelson scored once.

STUDENTS WINS IN ARCHERY COMPETITION

The Ebenezer Christian School archery team brought home trophies from the 2008 Wolf Cup, the National Archery in the Schools Program Washington State championship.

The school scored a record 2,836 points.

In the elementary boys’ division, John Van Dalen took first with 244 points, followed by Peter Benne in second with 240 and Matthew Buist in third with 228.

In the middle school girls’ division, Brooke Van Dalen won with 250 points, Molly Honcoop was second with 245 and Taryn Vis was fourth with 232.

Marcus DeBoer was second in the middle school boys’ division with 261 points.

BULLDOGS FALL

The Bellingham Bulldogs lost to the South Sound Shockers 12-6 on Saturday in semipro football action at Civic Stadium.

The Bulldogs took a firstquarter lead on a 3-yard run by Mike McKinley for the team’s only score of the game. The Shockers scored a field goal in each quarter and were held out of the end zone for the first time this season.

Billy Hagee was 9 for 31 passing for 108 yards and McKinley rushed 16 times for 81 yards. Jesh Morgan led Bulldogs receivers with four catches for 74 yards.

On defense, Bellingham was led by Chase Cantrell, who had eight tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.

Bellingham hosts Willamette Valley Raiders at 2 p.m. Saturday at Civic Stadium.

DUDLEY WINS ALL-AROUND

Jenna Dudley won the allaround gymnastics title at the 2008 Region 2 Championships in Spokane last weekend with a score of 37.80.

She placed first on bars with a 9.50 and floor with a 9.60, was second on the vault with a 9.35 and was fifth on the beam with a 9.35 in the Senior C age division.

Dudley, a level 10 gymnast from Lynden and a senior at Lynden Christian High School, qualified to the Junior Olympic National Championships by placing in the top seven of her age group. The nationals will be held in Kissimmee, Fla., May 17-18.

COSTON FINISHES SEVENTH

Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club finished seventh at the Callaway Golf Invitational on Monday at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton.

Ryan Benzel of Mill Creek Country Club won with a tworound score of 71-67—138. Coston finished seventh with a score of 69-73—142. Bill Thomas of North Bellingham Golf Course finished 31st with a 76-74—150.

BARTELDS HITS HOLE IN ONE

Marcy Bartelds of Maple Falls hit her first hole in one at Raspberry Ridge on April 12.

Bartelds used a 9-iron on the No. 3, 105-yard hole, and witnesses were Mike Bartelds, Jan Eskola and Orland Eskola.
