COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: Steamers win three in Scotland trip

The Chuckanut Bay Steamers rugby team posted a 3-1-1 record in Scotland.
The Steamers ended their tour on Friday with a 32-0 win against All Saints school from Australia.
Erik Schaut scored two trys, Loui Mitchel, Paul Smith, Michael Gonzales and Justin Santos all had one try each and Ben Morvee had one conversion.
Earlier in the day, the Steamers beat North Berwick High School 10-7. Santos had a try and Mitchell had a try and a conversion in the win.
Chuckanut also played Berwick Rugby Club to a 0-0 tie.
The only loss of the tour was 20-13 to Scottish schoolboy finalist, Aberdeen Grammar. In the most physical game during the tour, Chuckanut went ahead 13- 12 with six minutes to play, but Aberdeen was able to score and secure a hard-fought win. Alex Chalk, and Harrison Finley each scored trys, and Mitchell had a penalty kick in the game.
Chuckanut will play Liberty of Seattle on Saturday in Seattle. The teams record is now 10-1-1.
RUGBY TEAM PLAYS IN FINAL
A group of Nooksack and Ferndale 6th-grade all-star rugby
players went 3-1 and lost 20-10 to a team from Langley in the final at the Bay Side tournament in Surrey, B.C.
In the final, Tanner Klemann and Anthony Fleck scored.
The Whatcom County team started the tournament by beating the Bay Side Sharks 15-0. Cody Marshall, Tanner Klemann and Tristan Smith had a try each in the victory.
In the second round, the team beat United from Port Coquitlam, B.C., 60-0. Leading the way in the win were Tristan Smith and Tanner Klemann with two scores each, Eben Rossmiller and Cody Marshall with two trys each and Anthony Pace, Ty Goodin, Jacom Anderson and Kelly Roberts also with scores.
In the semifinal, against Abbotsford, the Whatcom County team won 45-0. Scoring twice were Tristan Smith and Anthony Fleck and scoring once were Eben Rossmiller, Wilber Estrada, Tanner Klemann and Jacob Smith.
SOUNDERS WIN AT WCC
The Seattle Sounders finished off their preseason schedule with a 3-0 win over the Puget Sound Soccer Academy Rapids on Sunday before 1,500 fans at Whatcom Community College.
Seattle pressured the Rapids from the opening whistle and PSSA’s Mike Lockwood had to come up big in the first 15 minutes to keep the score even.
After the Rapids’ Abdul Aman missed wide left in the 18th minute, the Sounders’ Brett Hite was brought down in the box and converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute.
PSSA’s Kurt Swanson had two chances in the first half, missing wide right in the 28th minute and heading directly into the hands of Sounders keeper Ben Dragavon in the 38th.
The Sounders opened the second half with a quick goal off the foot of Alex Megson in the 58th minute, and Megson struck again in the 65th to put the final score at 3-0.
The PSSA Rapids open Pacific Coast Soccer League play on May 10 against the Seattle Wolves at 5 p.m. at Whatcom Community College.
BASH CLAIM BASEBALL TITLE
The Bellingham Bash, a 14U baseball team, won the annual Early Bird tournament at Bender Fields in Lynden last weekend.
The Bash defeated teams from Renton, Seattle and Wenatchee to reach the finals where they defeated Lynden 10-0.
Noah Elliott and Cody Haas combined on a two-hit shutout in the final game. Hitting stars for Bellingham were Kyle Prather, Michael Hobson, Cody Mason and John Albert.
The Bash will compete at a National Qualifying event May 3 and 4 in Pasco.
Bash team members are Oliver Dougherty, Greg lewis, Tanner Dawson, Carl Henkel, Mickey Satushek, Cody Haas, Cody Mason, Noah Elliott, John Albert, Michael Hobson, Collin Quilliam and Kyle Prather.
TEAMS WIN AT PADDEN SCRAMBLE
Bob Fields and Phi Pham tied with the team of Denny Evans and Charlie Myers in the first division gross in a two-man scramble at Lake Padden Golf Course with scores of 67.
In the first division net, Steve Eggert and Steve Swank won with 58.
In the second division gross, Mike Anderson and Terry Moore won with a 70 and in the net Bob Beaty and Kevin Brown won with 57.
In the third division gross, Dave Hammers and Don Smith won with 72, and Ron Graves and Matt Marsh won the net with a 51.
