COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: WWU men’s rugby team wins region

The Western Washington men’s rugby team defeated Western Oregon University at home on Sunday to win its second consecutive Pacific Northwest Rugby Football Union Collegiate Division II championship. Gonzaga University finished third on Saturday with the University of Idaho placing fourth in the region.
Western travels to the Pacific Coast Championships in Orem, Utah, this week. The team will face No. 5-ranked Santa Clara University, Utah Valley State and Cal Maritime Academy.
Western remains undefeated in league play this season.
U-16 STEAMERS LOSE AT HOME
The Chuckanut Bay U-16 Steamers were defeated at home by the visiting Meralomas Rugby Club (B.C.) 26-10.
Meralomas led at the half 14-5. Chuckanut’s try was scored by Justin Santos.
The second half saw Wayne Lamositele score late in the game to close the score to 21-10.
Meralomas added another try on the final play when they converted a turnover and went the length of the field to score.
Riley Locker was selected Man of the Match. The U-16 Steamers finish league play with a 5-2 record and a second-place finish.
CHUCKANUT U-19 IMPROVES TO 8-0
The Chuckanut Bay U-19 Steamers beat previously unbeaten Harbour of Tacoma by a score of 20-8 on Saturday in Tacoma.
Paul Smith, Michael Gonzalez, Loui Mitchell and Levi Johnson each had tries for Chuckanut.
FERNDALE TEAM BEATS NOOKSACK
Ferndales Blue and Silver beat Nooksack 25-15 at Fairhaven Middle School.
Scoring for Nooksack was Alex Treptow, who had one try, and Tristan Smith, who had two goals.
Scoring for Ferndale was Ty Goodin with two trys and Cody Marshall, Anthony Fleck and Anthony Pace with one try each.
Nooksack chose Cody Marshall as player of the game and Ferndale chose Kelly Roberts.
All four Ferndale And Nooksack teams will play At Riverside in Everson starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
RAIDERS FINALIZE ROSTER
The Whatcom County Raiders minor-league football team announced most of its roster and will support two charities during its Black and White intrasquad game on April 12 at Civic Stadium.
The 2008 roster hasn’t been finalized, but will include:
Kelly Fee, Greg Conley, Mike Hoss and Jake Youngren from Western Washington University
Tygr Cain, a Blaine High grad who was named a Minor League Football News All-American last year.
Antoine Dudley, a returning player who was a key member of Ferndale High’s recent state championship team.
Justin Bronn, a returning player and also a coach at Nooksack Valley High.
Kevin Davis, a Nooksack Valley High grad who was named a Minor League Football News All-American last year.
Matt Costa, a returning player and a coach at Squalicum High.
Terry Toland, a returning coach and a coach at Bellingham High.

Semiahmoo Golf Resort director Brett Eaton and Loomis Trail Golf Course first assistant Justin Conlan tied for eighth place on Thursday and Friday during the PNW PGA Pro-Assistants Championship at Columbia Edgewater
Country Club in Portland, Ore. The pair had a two-day total of 70-67—137.
HOLDRIDGE WINS JUNIOR GOLF TOURNAMENT
Sehome’s Will Holdridge won the 9th-12th grade division during the Tacoma Jr. Open last weekend with a 72-71—143 at the Oakbrook Golf and Country Club and Whispering Firs Golf Course.
Matt Rawlitzer was eighth with a 76-72—148, Bryant D’Hondt was 23rd with a 81-75— 156 and Reid McEvoy was 29th with an 84-78—162.
Karly Olsen took 14th in the Amazing Girls division with 84- 88—172.
SCOTT HITS HOLE IN ONE
Harold Scott hit a hole in one on Wednesday at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
Scott used a 21 degree hybrid on the No. 8, 168 yard hole.
WESTBURY TO COMPETE IN MUSTANG CHALLENGE
Bellingham’s Tracey Westbury has been selected by the Mustang Heritage Foundation to compete in the Western States Horse Expo Mustang Challenge June 6-8 in Sacramento, Calif.
Westbury will compete in a field of 34 horsemen, who will have 90 days to gentle an American mustang.
Challenge contestants train wild horses for a purse of $7,500
During competition, trainers will be evaluated on the body condition of their American mustangs, as well as their ability to handle the horse “in hand,” through a series of maneuvers which include picking up the horse’s feet, maneuvering it through obstacles and loading it into a trailer. Following the in hand course, trainers will mount their animals and complete a horse course that will include a series of obstacles and require the trainer to demonstrate the level of competency the horse has accomplished.
Westbury has been riding and training in Whatcom County for nearly 40 years. Together with her daughter, Katie, she has adopted four wild horses since 2006 and volunteers with the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program.
AAU TEAM TAKES SECOND PLACE
The Whatcom County Heat AAU basketball team, comprising of fifth- and sixth-grade girls, lost the championship match on Sunday to the Tukwila Reign during the Skagit Valley Tulip Basketball Tournament.
Coach Ruben Romero and assistant coaches Leonard V’Dovec and Preston Knutson led the Heat to an undefeated AAU basketball season and several basketball tournament championships throughout the Puget Sound.
The Whatcom County Heat athletes are Breanna Chau, Michaela Knutson, Bodie Medler, Jennifer Paul, Alyssa Porter, Savanna Pothier, Alicia Romero, Taylor V’Dovec, Dasia Washington and Elle Moore.
FERNDALE EQUESTRIAN TEAM DOES WELL AGAIN
The Ferndale High School equestrian team participated in a meet in Clark County last weekend.
Kitana Kilborn tied for first in Trail with 67 points, Ashley Sutherland was second in Driving Minis with 60 points, Brooke Crawford was second with 69 points in Stock Seat and Jessica Martin was second in Over Fences with 66 points.
Crawford won Dressage with a score of 215 and Martin was second with 199.
The team of Kaylee Stuit and Kilborn won the Working Pairs with a score of 151 and the team of Crawford and Tuesday Hanson took third with a 143.
Ferndale was second out of two teams in the Drill competition with a score of 164, and Jon Trembly took second in Flags with 18 points.
