MAPLE FALLS - Squalicum's Marc Fuhrmeister had two good reasons to turn in a good performance Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Mount Baker Invitational cross country race at Silver Lake Park.
The first was his farther, Kurt, was able to get to the meet for the first time, after work prevented him during the first month of the season.
"I wanted to have a good run for my dad," Fuhrmeister said. "He's supported me for so long, so I wanted to do it for him."
The second reason, was a little more competitive.
"I'm a senior, and this is my last time I'm running on this course, and I wanted to make a little bit of a statement," he said.
Fuhrmeister certainly did that, placing sixth to be the top Whatcom County runner in the race. His time of 16 minutes, 14.02 seconds, was almost 30 seconds better than his previous season best on a five-kilometer course and helped the Storm finish fifth in the team standings with 131 points.
Lindbergh, spurred by the first-place run of Trevor Thompson in 16:05.88, claimed the team title with 67 points, one point ahead of Burlington-Edisson, which was led by Connor Whan's third-place effort. Lake Stevens and Lakewood followed in third and fourth, respectively, while West Valley's Justin Deganhardt was less than two seconds behind Thompson in second place.
"I'm definitely happy with a top-10 finish," Fuhrmeister said. "There were a lot of good runners here today."
He was joined in the top 15 by teammates Danny Gibson (16:37.40) and Dzmitry Ryzhkou (16:39.84), as Squalicum continued to show that it will be a contender for a high finish at state on the boys' side, as well as in the girls' race.
"We got new jerseys and a new team philosophy, and we're excited to see how far we can go," Fuhrmeister said.
Saturday definitely provided a good measuring stick, as the Storm got to see two-time defending Class 2A state champion Burlington-Edison for the first time this season.
"When you match up with a team like that, times don't matter," Fuhrmeister said. "You just try as hard as you can to catch them ... We'll get to see them again on Wednesday (in a Northwest Conference meet). It's always fun to run against a team like that."
Lynden was right behind the Storm in sixth place after its top five runners showed good pack running by finishing within 31 runners of each other. Matt Keiper led the way in 37th place in 17:23.28, while Josh Diacogiannis placed 45th in 17:35.15.
Mount Baker took eighth and was led by Connor Williams in 29th (17:14.79) and Keegan Chapman (17:33.38) in 44th.
Lynden Christian was two spots back in 10th, led by Jacob Hollander's 35th-place run in 17:22.56.
Oli Bear Don't Walk finished 33rd in 17:22.20 to help Nooksack Valley grab 18th, while Lee George's 52nd-place run in 17:47.73 helped Ferndale finish 19th. Meridian was 20th and was led by Sam Ryan (18:05.57) in 68th, and Blaine finished 23rd and was led by Clint Richardson (17:39.53) in 48th.
