FERNDALE - VanderYacht Park will be home to a new disc golf course.

The Ferndale City Council on Monday, July 6, agreed unanimously to spend $10,000 to create a beginners' course in the northern part of the park, near a trail. The park is at Washington Street and Portal Way.

Money will come from the Parks Mitigation Fund, which sets aside dollars collected from residential or commercial developments. The money can be used only for new projects to enhance parks.

Disc golf, also called frolf from its days when it was known as Frisbee golf, is played like regular golf. Just substitute different types of flying discs for different clubs and metal baskets for holes.

Ferndale Mayor Gary Jensen said officials will see if local business can quickly create the needed equipment. If not, the city will look for outside vendors.

Ferndale officials have said the course will be laid out and the equipment installed with guidance from Mike Leslie, a professional disc golfer who lives in Bellingham.
