BELLINGHAM - Police officers found a corroded hand grenade in Whatcom Creek Tuesday morning, July 7.

Because of the wear on the military device, the police bomb squad was unable to determine if it is still active, said Bellingham Police Sgt. Tim Lintz.

Officials are assuming the bomb was left sometime after construction that occurred in the area, the 1600 block of C Street, in 2007, Lintz said.

The bomb squad has transported the grenade to a protective storage facility and will be disposing of it later in July.
