WSU announces spring graduates from Whatcom County

These Whatcom County students were spring 2009 graduates at Washington State University:

Bellingham: Kelli Ackelson, B.A., apparel merchandising and textiles, cum laude; Kimberly Bierman, B.A., business administration; Jacob Dahl, B.S., civil engineering; Matthew Eichelberger, B.A., criminal justice, sociology and women’s studies; Brenna Fullner, B.A., social sciences; Megan Gerber, B.A., hospitality business management; Amanda Gibb, B.A., English; Cameron Gilmore, B.S., kinesiology; and Tristan Hurlbert, B.A., business administration, magna cum laude.

Kyle Kelln, B.A., foreign languages and cultures; Kathleen Martin, B.A., communication, magna cum laude; Maggie Peschek, B.S., zoology, cum laude; Aaron Rietman, B.S., electrical engineering, cum laude; Jillian Vandehey, B.A., communication; Gregory Wheeler, B.S., food science and human nutrition; Erica White, B.S., psychology; and Emily Wilson, B.A., speech and hearing sciences, summa cum laude.

Blaine: Michael Allan, B.A., humanities; JW Dalton, B.A., anthropology; and Tony Sain, B.A., humanities.

Custer: Suzanna Valdez, B.A., apparel merchandising and textiles, cum laude.

Everson: Brent Lindquist, B.A., communication, magna cum laude.

Ferndale: Lauren Carter, B.S., environmental science, cum laude; Riley Cornelsen, B.S., construction management, cum laude; Josh Demma, B.S., zoology; Timothy Mayock, B.S., chemical engineering; and Wendy McLeod, B.A., social sciences, cum laude.

Lynden: Jana Stuckrath, B.S., nursing, magna cum laude.

These Bellingham students were named to the spring-term honor roll at Oregon State University, in Corvallis: Mackenzie Allen, sophomore; Jack Baker, senior; Allyse Bourm, sophomore; Alyssa Guidon, junior; Amy Knight, senior; William Moore, sophomore; and Chelsea Parker, sophomore.

Sara Brady of Bellingham received a scholarship for the 2009-2010 school year from the Washington Indian Gaming Association. A member of Lummi Nation, Brady is pursuing an associate’s degree at Whatcom Community College.

Jon Hansen graduated with honors from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music with a bachelor’s degree in music, tuba performance. He graduated from Sehome High School in 2005.

Patti Walsh of Bellingham was named to the spring-semester Dean’s List at Des Moines Area Community College, Iowa, where she is a liberal arts major.

Ian Smith, an environmental science graduate student at Western Washington University, has won a John Knauss Fellowship and will serve a year in Washington, D.C., helping to formulate the country's marine fisheries policy. He is the first Western student awarded a Knauss Fellowship. Smith is a 2002 graduate of Sehome High School and a 2006 graduate of the University of Washington.

Three Whatcom County high school graduates received $1,000 college scholarships from the Mount Baker Chapter of the Harley Owners Group. The recipients are Sara Catey, Sehome High; Brittany Bebee, Nooksack Valley High; and Emily Magee, Mount Baker High. The scholarships go to students who have a close relative or guardian who owns a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Three Whatcom County high school students received scholarships from Trans-Ocean Products Inc.: Kelsey Green, Ferndale High; Alanna Steele, Sehome High; and Diana Horgen, Meridian High.

Brady Bomber, a freshman from Lynden majoring in accounting, was named to the Dean’s List at Saint Martin’s University, Lacy.

Two local winners were named in the Kohl’s Department stores Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program: Chelsea Kollmar of Acme and Erik Johnson of Bellingham.

Whatcom County government received the “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award” from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for the county’s budget for the fiscal period beginning in 2009. To receive the award, the county had to satisfy national guidelines for effective budget presentation.
