Two environmental groups are organizing post-July 4 cleanups at area beaches.

North Sound Baykeeper and the Northwest Straits Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation have organized the annual event, which will send volunteers out on Sunday, July 5, to Cherry Point, Locust Beach and Marine Park to pick up trash left behind by Independence Day revelers.

Beaches at Squalicum and Zuanich Point Park also may be picked up if there are enough volunteers.

Before volunteers start picking up trash, representatives from the two nonprofits will talk about protecting water quality and the area's ecology.

All cleanups will begin at 9 a.m.

Volunteers should bring sunscreen and a hat. Water, disposable gloves and trash bags will be supplied.

To participate, meet at the following places:

• Marine Park: 200 Harris Ave. in Fairhaven.

• Locust Beach: Locust Avenue near Marine Drive, at the Bellingham Kiteboarding Community Center.

• Cherry Point: Volunteers can meet at the Gulf Road access at 9 a.m., or carpool from the southeast corner of the Sunset Square parking lot near Cost Cutter at 8:15 a.m.

For information on the cleanups at Cherry Point or Marine Park, contact Wendy Steffensen at 733-8307 or waters@re-sources.org. For Locust Beach, e-mail Brian Smart at tonupyank@yahoo.com.
