The Whatcom Humane Society hopes local residents celebrate this Fourth of July by bringing home new pets.

From now through Saturday, July 11, adoption of all “red, white and blue” animals is half off. Prospective pet owners could choose a “red” Irish setter, a white kitten, or an animal with blue eyes or feathers, like a parakeet, said Laura Clark, community outreach director of the Whatcom Humane Society.

Those who have pets already need to take extra care over what is often a noisy, traumatic holiday. Every Fourth of July, the local stray animal population increases as many pets get scared and run away due to noisy fireworks and celebrations, Clark said.

Tips for keeping pets safe include keeping animals indoors and away from loud noises, making sure they are wearing collars with identification tags at all times and consulting with a veterinarian.
