The economy may be bust, but fireworks stands in Whatcom County are still holding out hope for booming sales.

Stands have popped up along major roads in the county in anticipation of Fourth of July celebrations.

Larry Newland, a volunteer at a fireworks stand in the parking lot of the Fred Meyer on Lakeway Drive, opened up shop Monday, June 29, to stronger-than-anticipated sales, he said.

Newland said he's seen more customers snapping up value packs that offer a variety of fireworks at discounted prices, as well as the traditionally popular Roman candles and pop-its.

"Our first day was good," Newland said. "Kids are excited. Some people seem to be more careful about what they buy."

The stand raises money for King Mountain Church, which in turn distributes the proceeds to at-risk women and children, said Anita Robinson, the church's ministry director.

Robinson said the stand doesn't usually see a lot of big spenders dropping hundreds of dollars on fireworks. Families with a set budget for fireworks are more common, and Robinson said she expects the amount budgeted will be smaller this year.

"I know (the recession) will have an impact, but I still anticipate people will come in and buy," Robinson said.
