MOUNT VERNON — A dedication ceremony for a long-awaited medical clinic for veterans is set for Thursday, July 2, on the second floor of the Mount Vernon Medical Building at 307 S. 13th St.
The 16,700-square-foot primary-care center opened May 18 near Skagit Valley Hospital.
The ceremony for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ new Community Based Outpatient Clinic is 10:30 a.m. to noon. Featured speakers will include U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Everett, who spearheaded the effort to expand VA medical services.
Whatcom County veterans had been pushing since at least 1995 for a medical clinic closer than Seattle, but they had hoped it would be located in Bellingham. The clinic eventually will serve more than 6,500 veterans living in northwest Washington, including Whatcom County.
