More than 1,700 cyclists rode through Bellingham during the first Ride to Conquer Cancer on June 20.
The 124-mile ride began after the opening ceremonies in Surrey, B.C. The cyclists rode through Bellingham on their way to Mount Vernon, where they spent the night before finishing their journey June 21 at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Participants from across the Pacific Northwest raised $6.9 million for cancer research in British Columbia and Washington state, ac-cording to organizers.
Money raised by U.S. cyclists will be donated to the Canary Foundation, which supports early detection cancer research at Fred Hut-chinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Funds raised by B.C. cyclists will go to the BC Cancer Foundation, which supports research at the BC Cancer Agency.
