BELLINGHAM - The owners of Lairmont Manor are contemplating an exhibit to mark the 70th anniversary of Marian Anderson's concert in Bellingham and are trying to locate people who attended her 1941 performance at Bellingham High School.
The black singer won extra international attention in 1939 when the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let her perform before an integrated audience at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. In response, first lady Eleanor Roosevelt helped organize an outdoor concert by Anderson on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that drew 75,000 people.
People with recollections or information about Anderson's visit to Bellingham, and her stay at Lairmont Manor, should call 647-1444 or e-mail info@lairmontmanor.com.
