Lummi Island homeschooler Simone Prince-Eichner proved on Thursday, June 18, that she knows history better than other U.S. middle school students.

The eighth-grader was named first-place winner in the junior individual performance category at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland. Simone, who placed second last year, did a performance about the importance of Clarence Gideon, the Florida inmate whose legal battle ensured that people accused of crimes can get a lawyer.

Lynden High School students Julia Roper and Lauren Olson placed 11th in the senior group performance category at the national event, marking the first time the teens made it to the final round. They did a performance about Eglantyne Jebb, co-founder of the charity Save the Children and an advocate of children's rights.
