Ten teachers in the Ferndale and Mount Baker school districts received Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century grants through the state.
The recipients are James Hively and Joelle Schneider at Central Elementary; Jill Morris and Ruth Marie Van Velck at Skyline Elementary; Jill Seager at Vista Middle; Diane Leigh at Acme Elementary; Judy Lloyd-Davis and Suzanne Yorks at Kendall Elementary; and Kevin Candela and Holly Koon at Mount Baker High.
Their two-year grants are for professional development, travel and classroom equipment.
Two Bellingham students were named to the dean’s list at the University of Portland in Oregon: Emily Tomaszewski, a sophomore majoring in environmental science, and Mike Johnson, a sophomore majoring in English.
Matt Rawitzer, a recent Squalicum High School graduate, was named State Athlete of the Week for the week of May 24-30 by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. Rawitzer was 8 under par for a two-day total of 136 for the state championships in Yakima that week. The award is sponsored by the association and by The Seattle Times.
