Two Whatcom County high schools have recently been ranked among the best in the country by Newsweek in its annual list of the top U.S. public high schools.
Bellingham High School makes the list for the first time, with a rank of 1,133 out of about 1,500 schools.
Blaine High School made the list for the third year in a row, coming in with a rank of 942. In 2008, Blaine High was ranked 749, and in 2007 it ranked 761.
The rankings are determined by the ratio of the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken in 2008 to the number of graduating seniors that same year. Schools need at least an equal number of each to make the list.
The schools on the list make up about 6 percent of the nation's high schools. Only 31 Washington high schools made the list, with International School in Bellevue at the top with a national rank of 11. In the state, Blaine's rank is 16 and Bellingham's rank is 23.
