WWU student gets scholarship to Cairo

BELLINGHAM � A Western Washington University student has won a scholarship to spend a year in Cairo, Egypt, studying the Arabic language.

Dana Rafter won the National Security Education Program�s Boren Scholarship, which provides students with up to $20,000 to study in countries that are important to U.S. interests but aren�t often visited for study abroad programs. Rafter will leave for Cairo�s Al-Dawin Institute in August.

Rafter hopes to graduate in 2011 with a major in Arabic studies and German, with hopes of becoming a diplomat.
