For the hundreds of Whatcom County residents who flocked to the Deming Logging Show Saturday, June 13, the event was an entertaining way to spend a sunny weekend afternoon.
But for Mount Baker High School juniors Kendal Cain, 17, and Kurtis Zender, 17, the event was a family affair.
Both boys said they have loggers in their families and competed in the logging show's logger relay event against family members.
They said they had practiced cutting logs once a week for months in preparation for this year's logging show, which was the boys' first time competing.
They were one portion of the logger relay, and were responsible for double bucking a log - a two-person team that cuts through a log with one long saw.
Although their timing and rhythm could improve, the boys said the experience was a good one, and they would be back again next year.
And, of course, the family rivalries provide extra incentive.
"It was cool competing against other guys that have been trained," Cain said.
The boys will be back in action when the logging shows resumes for another full day of events Sunday.
