LUMMI RESERVATION - The 63rd annual Lummi Stommish water festival gets into full gear Friday, June 12, at the Stommish Grounds, one mile south of the Lummi Island ferry terminal near Gooseberry Point.
Events include a carnival that opens at 3 p.m. Friday. War canoe races are one of the highlights, with the youth canoes beginning the competitions at 4 p.m. Friday. More races are scheduled for noon Saturday and Sunday. Traditional dances and sla-hal bone games will also be part of the action, along with arts and crafts, music and barbecued salmon.
The present-day Stommish traces its origins to the end of World War II, when it was launched as a tribute to Lummi Nation's returning war veterans. Honoring of veterans is still a focal point of the event.
