BELLINGHAM - Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association of Bellingham has been honored recently by two organizations.

• The nonprofit was presented with the 2009 Volunteer Organization of the Year Award by the Washington-British Columbia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.

• Trinity Oaks, a California winery, will sponsor NSEA's native-plant nursery to the tune of $2,500.

"It's tremendously helpful," said Rachel Vasak, NSEA executive director, of Trinity Oak's sponsorship.

NSEA and its estimated 3,000 volunteers last year planted nearly 17,000 native trees and shrubs along Whatcom County rivers and streams to restore habitat for salmon.
