BIRCH BAY - A ceremony Monday, May 25, will celebrate the official opening of Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve near Birch Bay.
The event begins at 11 a.m. with scheduled remarks by Whatcom County Executive Pete Kremen and Rand Jack of the Whatcom Land Trust.
One of Whatcom County's newest parks, the reserve features 54 acres of forest, beach and bluff. The land trust acquired the property in 2007 and later transferred it to the county for $375,000.
Participants can enjoy the three-quarter-mile trail, which is wheelchair accessible. Information on wooded wetlands and marine life revealed by the very low tide will be available.
To get to the reserve, take exit 266 from Interstate 5 and drive west on Grandview Road for 81/2 miles. Follow the road as it curves left and becomes Koehn Road. Continue a half-mile to the parking area on the left.
