LUMMI ISLAND - The board of commissioners for Whatcom County Fire District No. 11, located on the island, has approved spending about $157,000 to buy a new ambulance.

Chief Duncan McLane said the new ambulance should arrive in early 2010 and replace the current one, which is 19 years old.

The three-member board voted unanimously to approve the spending at its regular meeting Tuesday night, May 12.

McLane said the new ambulance will be much like the old one but will save the district money every year on repair and maintenance costs.

"It's not going to have 137,000 miles on it and a bunch of mechanical issues," McLane said.

McLane said the purchase completes the district's drive to replace aging apparatus that began in 1997.
