Students win Masonic scholarships

Several Whatcom County high school students received scholarships totaling $6,500 at the 43rd annual Masonic Scholar-Citizen Award and Scholarships program.

High school juniors Stephanie Robinson-Sammon from Blaine and Danny Gibson from Squalicum received the top female and male scholarships of $1,500 each.

Scholarships of $500 were awarded to these juniors: Mara Short-Miller from Bellingham High School, Andrew Jungkuntz from Ferndale, Karla Witte from Lynden, Samara Sytsma from Meridian, Nastacia Goodwin from Mount Baker, Danielle Way from Nooksack Valley, and Katherine Bachenberg from Sehome.

Other winners were Matthew Pettit from Bellingham, Camden Nix from Blaine, Erin Weisenhorn from Windward, Matthew Keiper from Lynden, Joel Wiebe from Meridian, Nicholas Jacoby from Mount Baker, Manuel Carrillo from Nooksack Valley, Alexander Lane from Sehome, and Nicole Wakabayashi from Squalicum.

U.S. Air Force Airman Thomas Haymaker graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Brian Haymaker of Bellingham and Carol Haymaker of Oak Harbor, he is a 2006 graduate of Squalicum High School.

U.S. Air Force Airman Michael Starkovich graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Chris Starkovich of Blaine and Vivian Holland of Pembroke Pines, Fla., he is a 2006 graduate of Blaine High School.

Four students from Carl Cozier Elementary School’s Math Club earned the top score and medals for their work on “Short Problems” in the Math Olympiad competition, May 2 in Edmonds. The students are fifth-graders Martin Sloley and Aaron Helms, and fourth-graders Dawson Bowhay and Zachary Steele. Their tests included problems on number sense, measurement, geometry, probability and statistics, and algebraic sense.

Squalicum High School student Adam Opryszek finished 15th out of 54 competitors at the 32nd International Bridge Building Contest, held April 25 at Bellingham High School. Opryszek won the Western Washington regional competition with a 25-gram bridge that held 125 pounds. He was the only student in the district who qualified for the international contest.
