Bird and nature fans are invited to join tens of thousands of bird watchers throughout North America for the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count, Friday Feb. 13, to Monday, Feb. 16.

Those who want to participate are asked to count and identify species of birds for at least 15 minutes for one or more days of the event and report their sightings online at www.birdcount.org.

The data is used to help researchers understand bird population trends across the continent, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, which is co-sponsoring the event with the National Audubon Society.

Participants are also encouraged to take digital images of the birds for the event's photo contest. All participants will be entered in a drawing to win dozens of bird-related items such as bird clocks, books and feeders.

Businesses, schools, nature clubs and other community organizations interested in participating in the count may contact the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at 1 (800) 843-2473.
