A man led police on a chase from Ferndale to Bellingham and then around various businesses and homes near Lowe’s Home Improvement store late Thursday, Nov. 20, before being arrested.

David Zoll, 44, of Snohomish was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of attempting to elude a police vehicle, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana, stolen property and drug paraphernalia, Ferndale Police Lt. Bill Hatchett said.

The chase began about 9:50 p.m. when Ferndale police ran the plates of a white 2002 Ford pickup parked on the side of the 1400 block of Slater Road. It came back as stolen from Snohomish County, Hatchett said.

The pickup took off, went onto southbound Interstate 5 and sped off the freeway and into the Lowe’s lot, 1050 E. Sunset Drive.

The driver, carrying a long, cylindrical object, got out and ran. Because it was dark, officers did not know if the object was a weapon. Witnesses, whose yards Zoll allegedly hid in during the chase, also saw him holding a long object, Hatchett said.

Four police agencies helped set up a perimeter and search for Zoll, who was arrested near Whatcom Educational Credit Union, 3061 Orleans St.

Hatchett said police still hadn’t found the object Zoll was carrying as of Friday evening but encouraged anyone who finds something matching the description to call the Ferndale Police Department at 384-3390.
