BELLINGHAM - Dick McKinley, currently the Bellingham Public Works director, will take over the same job for Tacoma early next year, Tacoma officials announced Thursday, Nov. 20.

McKinley replaces Bill Pugh, who retired earlier this year following a 33-year career with the city. City Manager Eric Anderson chose McKinley following a nationwide search.

McKinley has also worked for the cities of Walla Walla and Springfield, Ore. His salary will start at $142,293, officials said. He was scheduled to make $118,248 in Bellingham next year, according to the city's 2009 preliminary budget.

McKinley is scheduled to begin work in Tacoma Jan. 5.
