Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 17-year-old Meridian High School student on Tuesday, Nov. 18, after he admitted to spray painting offensive graffiti on school walls and windows on the night of Nov. 17.

The boy was charged with first-degree malicious mischief, a felony, for causing an estimated $2,700 in damage to school property, said Detective Alan Smith of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office.

The Bellingham Herald does not publish the names of juveniles charged in crimes unless they involve major injury or special circumstances.

The graffiti, which was found in about 50 different places around campus, contained racial slurs and made references to Detroit metal/rap group the Insane Clown Posse, said Meridian School District Superintendent Tim Yeomans.
