County residents gain recognition

Several local residents recently were named to boards, won prizes or reached other milestones.

Paul Morell of Blaine has earned his Eagle Scout award. Morell is a member of Troop No. 4028, sponsored by Lynden’s Mount Baker Rotary Club.

Two Whatcom County residents were named college trustees by Gov. Chris Gregoire. Former Bellingham Mayor Tim Douglas was named a Whatcom Community College trustee, and Sonia Arevalo-Hayes of Ferndale, co-owner of TC Trading Co., was reappointed as a Bellingham Technical College trustee. Both of their terms run until Sept. 30, 2013.

Kathy Bergman, Americanism chairperson for Bellingham Elks Lodge, presented a new barbecue to the VA Puget Sound Fisher House, a new Seattle facility where families can stay while veterans receive medical care, on Oct. 3. The Home Depot Foundation helped provide the barbecue.

Ginn Hale of Bellingham won the 2008 National Spectrum Book Award for best LGBT science fiction novel, for her book “Wicked Gentlemen.” The Gaylactic Spectrum Award honors works of science fiction, fantasy and horror that include significant positive depictions of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered characters, themes, or issues.

Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bellingham on Oct. 26 celebrated its 30th anniversary as a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Honored guests were the church’s founding pastor, the Rev. Richard Husman, and his wife, Glo.

Mary Walby, a Bellingham piano teacher, has been elected president of the Bellingham chapter of the Washington State Music Teachers Association. Walby has more than 25 years of experience teaching and performing.

Kellie Woodcock graduated from the CBP Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, N.M. A graduate of Lynden High School, she is the daughter of Ginny Rutherford of Bellingham.
